Helsinki, 19-21 October 2017 --- After attending the 13th Interparliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly held in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Deputy Speaker Pilar Juliana “Pia” Cayetano proceeded to Helsinki to meet with Finnish education officials.
Known for her education advocacy, Deputy Speaker Cayetano met with Mr. Ilkka Turunen, Special Government Advisor, at the Ministry of Education and Culture, who gave an overview of the guiding principles and framework behind Finland much-admired teaching and learning system. The meeting with the National Agency for Education focused on the language education policy and practice in Finland. The Finnish success story in education could provide valuable insights for developing a high-quality education system for all Filipinos.
The Deputy Speaker also took the opportunity to spend an evening with the members of the Filipino community (Filcom) in Helsinki. The Filcom members appreciated the Deputy Speaker’s interest in knowing about their experiences on living in Finland, as well as their activities as a community.
For her meetings in Helsinki, the Deputy Speaker was accompanied by Atty. Deegee Uy Anastacio, her Chief of Staff; Ms Teresita Ruutu, the Philippine Honorary Consul in Helsinki; and Ms Maria Elena P. Algabre, the Chargé d’affaires, a.i., of the Philippine Embassy in Oslo, Norway. End
