Simbang Gabi in Oslo

18 December 2018, Oslo – For the first time, the Philippine Embassy in Norway celebrated Simbang Gabi with the Filipino community in Oslo, at St. Joseph’s Church, on 15 December 2018. The Philippine Embassy hosted the first of the nine nights of Catholic masses, in celebration of a venerable Filipino Christmas tradition.

The Simbang Gabi mass was led by Fr. Andrew G. Recepcion, Spiritual Director of the Pontificio Collegio Filippino, in Rome, Italy, and Fr. Johan Dumandan of the the Sacred Heart Filipino Chaplaincy-Our Lady of Mount Carmel Council in Oslo, Norway.

After the mass, Embassy personnel and members of the Filipino Community in Oslo, enjoyed a Christmas salo-salo at Menighets Lokale, where Ambassador Batoon-Garcia explained to some members of the Filipino community the cultural significance of the traditional Simbang Gabi. The Ambassador also shared how historically, Filipino life centered on the plaza, which included the Catholic church, the municipality, and the market. END
